What’s the deal with the granular iodine?
The DEA becoming more strict on incoming shipments of granular iodine because of its use in the making of illegal methamphetamine (crystal meth), so it is currently impossible for us to buy the raw material needed to make an iodine formula that is identical to what used to carry.
The iodine we carry now is a solution with only potassium iodide, resulting in a transparent or light yellow color instead of the orange/brown color customers may be familiar with. However, we are pleased to inform you that the iodine concentration per drop is the same as the original formula.
Is it just as good?
As a supplement, yes. It doesn’t matter whether it comes from potassium iodide or granular iodine.
However, if you want to stain microscopy slides (which is what Lugol’s is mostly used for), then potassium iodide will not work at all. Also to kill bacteria, like Dr. Clark suggested it in many places, potassium iodide will also work, but Lugol’s iodine is more effective.
